Jake brought in more firewood, careful not to let Brownie out of the cabin this time. "Here's more." His voice trembled from the cold, and his face looked pink from the exposure.
"That should last us a while." Joy stoked the fire. Brownie sat beside her, looking comfy and cozy.
Jake put the wood down and stood next to the fireplace to warm up. "Brownie seems to like you." He nodded down at the dog. "She's usually skittish around strangers."
Joy placed her arm around the dog and patted her. "Really? She seems super friendly to me."
Brownie rolled over and exposed her belly. She never let strangers pet her and generally didn't care much for women. Brownie had hated Jakeâs wifeâhe really needed to think of her as his exâand Brownie had never given the woman the full tummy for rubbing.
Brownie had sensed what a cold-hearted bitch his ex-wife was, long before Jake did.
"You're a good girl." Brownie jumped up and started licking Joyâs face, but she only laughed and petted the dog more.
Yep, she was totally not like his ex-wife. By now, the ex would have been yelling like Lucy Van Pelt that she was covered in dog germs and insisting that she was dying.
His ex-wife would also be driving him nuts by now. A shiver darted up his spine. Being trapped in this cabin with Michelle would be like the tenth circle of Hellâan experience he'd never want to endure.
Joy looked beautiful playing with his puppy. So open and carefree in their playtime that a huge smile spread across his face.
He had wanted his wife to be like this. Easyâgoing, not just easy.
Instead of focusing on his past pain and the reason for their divorce, he studied the beautiful woman in front of him. His friends had told him to move on, but all the women in his past had cheated on him. Even his high school sweetheart had dumped him for another guy.
The bar for girlfriend morality wasn't set very high, and family values were usually next to nil.
Joy didn't seem to mind being on the floor, didn't mind wearing comfortable jeans, and didn't mind being trapped with nothing to do and nowhere to go.
Brownie pawed at Joy's t-shirt, and the fabric came down a few inches. It wasn't enough to show anything more than a bit of cleavage, but it was sufficient to remind Jake of the state of undress Joy had been in when he first met her.
"Did you take inventory of food and whatnot?" He asked to get his mind on something else.
She stood and left a wagging tail behind. "Fortunately,"âshe walked past him to the kitchenâ"I just went grocery shopping." She opened a cupboard door. "Bread, peanut butterâ¦." She opened another drawer. "Chips, water, toilet paper. We also have lunch meat in the fridge. Even if the electricity goes out, I think it'll keep if we set it outside."
"Do you think we may lose electricity?"
"It's been known to happen."
He nodded and let that sink in. Joy was definitely Batman in this situation.
